Can’t Even Win a Rigged Election

April 6, 2008 – 10:00 am

Its now over a week since the Zimbabwe election and Mugabe still hasn’t been declared winner of the Presidential poll.

As its been widely reported for many years that Zanu-PF do everything to rig election, it is amazing that the result STILL has not been declared. This gives the impression that despite millions leaving the country (mostly opposition supporters), Mugabe knows the result and its not good news for him and his party.

The world look on and despite everyone looking forward to the end of one of the worst governments in recent history, Mugabe seems intent on retaining control of this country that has gone from being the bread basked of Africa, to being a food importer.  Inflation is over 100,000% and life expectancy is now the lowest of any nation in the world.

White Rhodesia under Ian Smith was shunned (rightly so) by the world, but many in Zimbabwe must think that life was much better for them in the 60’s and 70’s, as Mugabe has ruined this country.

What does the United Nations do?  What do the neighbouring nation do, especially South Africa?  NOTHING!

Zimbabwe is rightly an African problem to solve and not for Britain or any of the former colonial powers.

But Africa turns a blind eye as the life is steadily sucked out of it by Mugabe and the poor conditions.  Either there will ultimately be a blood bath as civil war  breaks out as Mugabe refuses to go (where to?) or the world must intervene.

The UN’s record shows it will stand by as we watch desperate people rioting when there is no food, and Mugabe’s henchmen, killing them.

I hope I am wrong in thinking that the only result will be a bloodbath as I cannot see any other outcome. Whaever happens, the only shame will be on Africa and Mugabe.
